Hialeah

‘All ways lead to Hialeah’ was one of the first slogans associated with the city of Hialeah in Miami-Dade County. It’s a statement which rings true to this day, given that the city has now become the heart of the region, with access to every other area in the county being just 20 minutes away. While it was originally inhabited by the Tequesta, followed by Seminole Indians, it was incorporated into a city only in 1925. Hialeah means ‘High Prairie’ and that’s just what it was, until it caught the eye of aviator Glenn Curtiss and cattleman James H. Bright in 1921 who then started developing the region. Despite its relatively late entry into the scene, the story of Hialeah’s remarkable growth is one that’s told time and again.

The rise and fall of Hialeah:

During it’s time, Hialeah was envisioned as the hub for elite and back in the 1920s, Hialeah was the place to be. From greyhound racing in its infamous racetrack to the Spanish sport of jai-alai to being the home where several silent movies where made, the city was certainly going places. While the Great Hurricane in 1926 slowed it down, it could not dilute the spirit of the community that pushed on, becoming one of the fastest growing cities.

Hurricane Irma: Sewage-laden flood water

In 2017, Irma lashed out on a vast spread of South Florida, and Hialeah wasn’t spared either. While the winds tore off roofs and trees, and the flood waters penetrated every low-lying home and office, Hialeah had another problem to deal with. One of the city’s regional sewage pump station lost power, and there was no means to repair it until the storm subsided. Sewage spilled out on the streets, mixing with flood water and bringing bacteria-infested water into homes, prompting a few residents to abandon their abodes. However, it was only a matter of time before things got back to normal, the process accelerated by a few reliable damage restoration companies like Hialeah Restoration Company.
